Beaux-Arts Academy Arts & Architecture in UTAH!!!!!

Its not very often that I post something that isn't my own art.  Why? because this is my art blog.  Anyway I am going to be attending a school in Salt Lake City that will teach arts and architecture in a classical and traditional way.  Everything from wash rendering to multi-figure painting.  I have been waiting for training like this for years.....and I am so excited.  This is the website http://www.baa-utah.com/ .

Charcoal, Wash Drawing, after Frederic Rodrigo Gruger (FR Gruger)

This is the beginning and ending of a copy that I did of after Frederic Rodrigo Gruger.  He would usually start with a light drawing, then wash, and wolff carbon pencil.  I can't find anywhere that still sells a wolf pencil in the grades that he used.  Bummer!!!

aaaahhhhh there's a Beetle in my Sketchbook!!!!

I was just looking through some old sketchbooks to get some ideas.  I found this drawing that I did about three years ago.  I remember really enjoying this drawing.  It's fun to look at old drawings and measure your progress.

PS I love smoother paper in my sketchbooks.

Andrew Loomis Creative Illustration

I have been reading a book called "Creative Illustration" by Andrew Loomis.  This book has been a great help.  He discusses how to better work from a photograph although he suggests that getting a real model is the best way.  Anyway in the book Andrew suggests that the reader do a copy of one of his photos.  So this is a pencil drawing that I did of a photograph in his book.  (This is one of those books that I wished I owned.)

Charles Bargue and Gerome copy Drawing

So this is a horse head that I copied in pencil.  This is form the Charles Bargue and Gerome  Drawing course book.  Doing these drawings has trained my eyes to see better.  I was under the direction of Ryan Brown and Niki Covington.  Ryan has an art school called The Center for Academic Study & Naturalist Painting (CAS), in Springville, Utah.

Fun pencil sketches. (from an old movie book)

I am trying to learn how to use charcoal.
I think the white should be used more delicately/sparingly?

Business Card

I have been wanting to do a business card for a while. I started with a pencil drawing....

then I painted it in oils.

I was going for something fun to capture peoples attention. I hope it works.

PS (The colors in real life look so much better.)

Sketchbook

These are straight out of the sketchbook. Pen and Pencil.
I like the tree the most.

Profile practice.

Happy whimper snapper.

Geometric Forms

I have learned so much from trying to draw simple forms.
I am understanding depth better. And forcing myself to push
and pull the form.

Random Stuff

Here is another head study. This was my favorite one,
but now when I look at it there are a few problems.
Sometimes art is made to haunt us.
This is a self portrait.  Done with white paint and pencil.
This is charcoal. It was done in 2005, drawing II. I still really like this piece.
